We  would like to share a bit of information about Wallowa Lake, Oregon.  Have you ever wondered if highways end? Well, if you take Highway 82 North into the Wallowa Valley it will end at the lake.  Many years ago our lake was formed by a confluence of great moraines.  The crystal-clear water with the majestic mountain for backdrop create a breath-taking view.  We have many visitors who return year after year just to enjoy our beautiful spot in the northeast part of Oregon.  Our lake is around 3.7 miles long and 3/4 mile wide.  The lake is almost 300 feet deep.  The elevation is 4,372 feet in a rural setting and sitting between the Eagle Cap Wilderness and Seven-Devils Mountain peaks of Idaho.  The air smells sweet and at night the stars are a wonder to see.

Wallowa Lake is just one-mile south of Joseph, Oregon.  Our county seat is Enterprise which is the largest town in Wallowa County.  If traveling here from the Boise, Idaho area the drive is only 4 1/2 hours.  If coming from the west side of the west side of the state in the Portland area the drive is around 6 hours.  From La Grande, Oregon which is our closest large city it to us, it is only 1 1/2 hour drive.  Whichever direction you might be traveling you will see some awesome views in the State of Oregon

If you’re wondering about activities, we have something for all ages.  The Wallowa Lake Tram is one of the steepest vertical lifts in North America.  The gondolas will carry four passengers from 4,450 feet up to 8,150 feet to view the summit at Mt. Howard (el. 8,256 feet).  We have miniature golf, bumper boats, horseback riding starting at the trailheads into the mountains, shopping, fishing, boating, hiking, bird watching and plenty of mule deer that are comfortable being around humans (please don’t feed the deer).  Also the Wallowa Lake State Park is located on south side to the lake.  The Chief Joseph Memorial is just north of the lake on a 62 acre site with hiking trails, a running stream and beautiful meadows.  Also, it is only a short drive into Joseph and all the activities there.

So, if your vacation destination is Northeast Oregon, plan to take Highway 82 North until you run out of road.
